Discover the Alpilles

The alpilles form a series of limestone outcrops streching 50 km from Arles
to Avignon, their barren peaks towering over pine and cypress, vineyard and
olive grove. Here, in this unspoiled landscape, are some of the best walking
routes of Provence.

A conservation area of national importance,  the Alpilles  have long been the
inspiration of poets and painters, including Mistral and Van Gogh. There are
charming villages and towns to visit :

Les Baux perched on its cliff, Saint-Rémy with itsRoman remains, Maussane, centre of olive oil and, nearest of all,
picturesque Eygalières. Each has a weekly market where local produce : fruit and vegetables, olives, honey, goats
cheese, pottery, lavender and Provençal  fabrics are sold.  Antique and craft  fairs, concerts,  village fêtes  and bull
running are regular events; and the sports enthusiast can enjoy cycling, golf, tennis and, of courses, boules.

         ...and Mediterranean Provence

The Alpilles lie within the  triangle boundes by  Avignon,  Aix and Arles, the home of
architectural treasures  dating from antiquity :  the great Roman arena at Arles ' with
the pont du Gard just across the Rhône ) , Romanesque churches, medieval castles
the palace of the popes at Avignon and the splendid mansions and boulevards of Aix.

The summer music festivals of  Aix and Avignon  are world renowned,  and opera can be
heard in the open air  Roman theatre in  Arles. If gastronomy is close to your heart, then
ask us for a list of recommended restaurants in the area, and directions to the best local
vineyards where you can buy excellent Provençal wine direct from the owners.

For the explorer who wants to venture further afiels, there is the Camargue with its bird sanctuary, white horses, bulls,
flamingoes, sandy beaches and pretty towns like stes-Maries  de-la-Mer, Aigues Mortes and St Gilles du Gard. For a
bouillabaise you have to go to Marseille, with its old port, fashionable shops and the Chateau d'If.East of Marseille are
the spectacular cliffs of the Calanques,  which can be  reached from the picturesque resort of Cassis, hardly changed
since it was the home of Matisse and his circle. None of these treats is more than an hour away by car.
